Speed Surveys are usually carried out for the purpose of determining the level of vision at the point of contact of two roads or access points or as part of the design process for a new road or junction. They are also used in the evaluation of traffic calming schemes and in relation to a safety examination of the local road network. Usually speed surveys are carried out to either validate or rebut the concerns of the 3rd party, for example in a planning application or appeal.

Speed surveys can be carried out as part of access feasibility investigations or as part of a Transport Statement or Transport Assessment. However, they can also be used as part of a simpler planning application where the local authority may be questioning the suitability of an existing or new access.
